Ultimately, psychologists use statistics to support or refute predictions concerning the behavior of humans and non-human animals.

Augmented Dickey-Fuller Unit Root Tests
You use the Augmented Dickey-Fuller t-statistic. Here are the various cases of the test equation: a. When the time series is flat (i.e. doesn’t have a trend) and potentially slow-turning around zero, use the following test equation: ?zt = ?zt?1 + ?1?zt?1 + ? 2 ?zt?2 + L + ? p ?zt? p + at. where the number of augmenting lags (p) is determined by minimizing the Schwartz Bayesian information criterion or minimizing the Akaike information criterion or lags are dropped until the last lag is statistically significant.
Chapter 9 - Introduction to the t Statistic
This is a short chapter that introduces the common t-test that most scientists frequently use, and that you have undoubtedly heard about before now. Please read and understand the whole chapter. I will summarize the most important points here. Up to this point, we have been using a test statistic, , that allows us to make an inference about whether our sample is different from some population mean.

Overview of Statistical Tests
Virtually every statistic, parametric or nonparametric, has assumptions which must be met prior. to the application of the experimental design and subsequent statistical analysis. We will discuss specific assumptions associated with individual tests as they come up. Virtually all parametric statistics have an assumption that the data come from a population. that follows a known distribution. Most of the tests we will evaluate in this module.

Statistical significance relates to the question of whether or not the results of a statistical test meets an accepted criterion level. In psychology this level is typically the value of p < .05. They have settled on a measure of the magnitude of a treatment effect that controls for the sample size, one of the major contributors to the significance level statistic.

Statistics - The Writing Center at UNC-Chapel Hill
Many writers lack a firm grasp of the statistics they are using. The average reader does not know how to properly evaluate and interpret the statistics he or she reads. The main reason behind the poor use of statistics is a lack of understanding about what statistics can and cannot do. Many people think that statistics can speak for themselves. But numbers are as ambiguous as words and need just as much explanation.

Sampling Distributions
Any statistic (such as the sample mean) computed from the measurements in a random sample can be expected to vary in its value from random sample to random sample. Accordingly, we shall want to study the distribution of all possible values of some statistics. Such distributions will be very important in the study of inferential statistics, since inferences about populations will be made using sample statistics.

Now, at this point, you should be asking “how to find a p-value.” You compute the observed value (from data using an appropriate test statistic). Generally, this observed value splits the entire probability of one into two probabilities, one probability on the left and another probability on the right of the observed value. See the diagram given below. A probability is the area between the curve and horizontal axis when the probability distribution is continuous.
